Conscious Rituals

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and are settling into the flow of Fall.    As the energy shifts away from the more carefree vibe of Summer with its pervasive lightness and moves toward the more structured darkness of Fall, establishing a daily routine can really help with the transition and ground us in the present moment.   Ritual has been around since the beginning of time. We are ritualistic beings by nature. You are likely doing rituals every day and may or may not realize it.  Waking up every morning and going for a walk, having Read the full article…

It’s all about balance!

I love summer.  It has always been the time of year when I feel most alive, excited and full of inspiration and creativity.  The downside to this is that I tend to over schedule myself, saying yes way too often and as a result find myself no longer feeling excited but overwhelmed and burned out instead. I am learning that just because I can do something and want to do it, doesn’t always mean I should.  The lesson is not an easy one. We are drawn to what we are like. There is nothing inherently wrong with that.  That is, Read the full article…

Yoga Gives Us Time

Happy middle-ish of the month! With the longer days and higher energy of spring, I find myself getting caught up in the quickening of the season. I am scheduling more, moving faster and taking less and less time for myself and for turning in. Oops. I have noticed that I seem to be moving from one thing to the next with practically no down time. As a result, I find myself unable to fully focus on what I am doing and I end up feeling fatigued and anxious at the end of the day. I am reminded of this quote Read the full article…

Comparison

I hope your month is going well! As I consider all the things I want to create and look to others for inspiration, the following quote keeps ringing in my head: Comparison is the thief of joy. With the neurosis and suffering that comes from comparing ourselves to others, especially on the internet, I’ve been putting my attention toward respecting, appreciating and celebrating others for their unique gifts. One of the surest ways to increase suffering and stop our dreams in their path is to constantly look outside of ourselves in comparison to others. When we are always comparing, it Read the full article…

Yoga is a Practice of Action

Happy middle of the month! I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day filled with love and laughter. I am behind on just about everything because things don’t always turn out as planned. And this is why practicing the art of surrender can be super helpful 🙂 Yoga is a practice of action. If we don’t like what are getting, then we have to do something different. We cannot just know, understand, or desire something in our mind. We have to actually do something about it. However, knowing what action to take can be a challenge. So we practice yoga Read the full article…

Awareness

Happy February! I hope you are having a great start to your year and if you set them, that your intentions, goals and/or resolutions are going well and bringing you greater health and happiness. When I first started yoga, I was pretty frustrated with how far I felt I had to go in my life with regards to where I wanted to be physically, emotionally, in my work, diet, relationships, behaviors, health, etc. I remember expressing this to a teacher and her saying to me that at first, the awareness alone is enough. She said to start by simply observing Read the full article…

Knowing vs Not Knowing

I hope you are having a great month so far. I was just having a conversation with someone about knowing vs not knowing and the confusion, pain and fear that can result when we are unsure about which way to go. We have so many roles, goals and responsibilities in our lives that we sometimes just go on autopilot and do all the things without really pausing to see if what we are doing is still true to our heart. Then maybe one day we wake up and see that the things we are doing no longer serve us and Read the full article…

Happy (almost) July! I wanted to get this out early so you could see our Holiday schedule.  We have a cancellation the day before the holiday, a very limited schedule on July 4th and a cancellation the day after, so please be sure and check it out here! I love the summer and always have.  I love the spontaneity and carefree pace that this season brings.  However, with less of a schedule and routine, it can sometimes feel hectic and out of balance.   One of the ways we can stay focused and grounded when things are less than routine Read the full article…

Atha

I hope your month is off to a great start! As I was thinking about what to write this morning, the word commitment kept coming to mind. If we want something that we don’t have it usually doesn’t just magically appear in our life simply by wishing for it. When it does, be grateful and celebrate because it is a rare thing indeed. What is usually required is a commitment and the ability to follow through with concrete action. The very first word of the Yoga Sutras is Atha which translates as Now and implies a commitment. Now begins my Read the full article…

Creating Habits

Happy Month of May!! One year ago, I committed to writing 3 pages a day…every day. And I did it! Every single day without fail, I wrote 3 pages. The concept is from the Artist’s Way which I did over 20 years ago and was going to go through it again last year but life happened so I decided to just write….every day. It’s called morning pages in the book and it’s simply stream of consciousness writing with no agenda. It has been such an incredible experience to set the pen to paper every single day, no matter how I Read the full article…

Gratitude

I hope you are having a great month so far and find yourself surrounded by an abundance of things to be grateful for despite any challenges you may be facing. As humans, we live in a world of duality. Regardless if it is an ‘illusion’ or not, our human life is a constant play between seemingly opposing forces such as light and dark, hot and cold, effort and ease, etc. The practice of Yoga is about guiding us inward to align body, mind and spirit so we are better able to reconcile these extremes for a more sattvic (or balanced) Read the full article…

Choose Your Focus by Christy Marsden

Happy December! I hope all is well with you and yours. With all the craziness in the world it is easy to get distracted from what is truly important. We can drift into frustration, anxiety, fear, anger or a host of other, not so pleasant emotions. In Yoga philosophy there is a sutra that I have been using in my practice to help me stay connected in body, breath and mind, YS 1.33. When we drift out of a state of yoga or union, this sutra offers a practical way to come back to center. It offers 4 simple ways Read the full article…

Happy Mid October! I hope you are having a great month so far. For the past 11 1/2 years since opening Yoga Blend, I have written a bi-weekly newsletter about the benefits of a yoga practice. Besides my best friend of 38 years, yoga is the longest and healthiest relationship I’ve ever had. This practice started me on a journey of self-discovery over 20 years ago and continues to reveal so much to me about Read the full article…

Less is More

Hello! I hope you are doing well and enjoying the longer days that come with Daylight Savings. I have been focusing lately on the concept ‘less is more’. I can admit my habit of always feeling the need do more, create more, work more, grow more. And there is nothing wrong with that…until there is 🙂 I love life and always want more of it. I am a huge fan of setting goals and understand the importance of striving towards those self- concordant goals as a key to happiness. However, if it is not balanced with savoring what is here Read the full article…

surrender to the now

Happy November! As the season changes, we are changing right along with it so our practices should change as well. It takes our attention, curiosity and a willingness to know what to change and how to go about it. The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, which is the foundational text for the philosophy of Yoga, is filled with reminders and practices for us to have a more balanced mind and therefore, a more balanced life. The practice of the 8 limbs is an integral part of Yogic Philosophy and is a way to develop the quality of discernment which is the Read the full article…

Pay Attention

Happy October! It’s good to be back in LA and seeing so many of you around the studio. A practice that I have been really been embracing, albeit with struggles, is that of paying attention. This quote is on my refrigerator in Nashville so I see it often: “What tools do we need to use? Only one. We’ve all heard of it, yet we use it so very seldom. It’s called attention.” -Charlotte Joko Beck Paying attention is really where the yoga begins and ultimately is what yoga is all about. We practice paying attention to the way our body Read the full article…

Our Habits Define Us

I hope your year is off to a great start!   Like many of us, I have set intentions for the new year which has had me thinking about my habits. The mind is a habit making machine and what we do over and over again is who we become. Our habits define us. One of the intentions of yoga is to replace old habits that may have served us at one time but no longer do with better habits that bring us more health, happiness, pleasure, meaning and peace.  We are constantly changing and in order to keep our suffering Read the full article…
