Celebrate with us!

I hope you are doing well and making space in your life for the people and things you love! As I have mentioned and as you may have seen around the studio, Yoga Blend will be celebrating 11 years next week! When I first opened the studio, I never really thought beyond the first few years. I just knew that I wanted to create a community so we could share in the life changing practice of yoga together. I often say that yoga helps me do everything else in my life better and because of that I wanted to practice Read the full article…

Community

Happy February! I hope your month is off to a great start. It has been so wonderful seeing so many of you around the studio the past few days which has had me thinking a lot about and feeling really grateful for our community. I saw a quote recently that I cannot seem to find again so I don’t remember exactly what it said or who said it but I do remember that the essence of it was this: It is quite possible that the new guru is community. I couldn’t agree more! Living in Nashville part of the time Read the full article…

11 Years

I hope your month and year is off to a great start! In just over 6 weeks…Yoga Blend will celebrate 11 years. When I opened Yoga Blend of course I wanted it to thrive and last forever. But 11 years? It’s funny how I just never imagined getting to this milestone. Our 10 year anniversary seemed like a number way out there in the future and when we reached it last year, it was huge! But there is something about 11 that just seems so incredible to me. We are past a decade and are now into our 2nd decade!! Read the full article…

Gratitude and Growth

Happy New Year! I hope you had wonderful holidays filled with lots of celebration, love, laughter and great food, no matter how you chose to celebrate! I am very excited about the new year and being back at the Blend more regularly when our teacher training begins at the end of the month! With the start of a new year, many of us may been thinking of what we want to create in the coming months. After years of setting goals and reaching them only to set more goals and stress out to reach them, I have decided to go Read the full article…

Detachment

I hope you are having a great month and enjoying the gifts that this time of year brings with it. Speaking of this time of year, if we are not careful, it is easy to get out of our regular routine and find ourselves feeling depleted. The sugar, alcohol, parties, late nights, obligations, colder weather and travel can easily lead us away from the holiday cheer and into the holiday blahs. As most of you know, a consistent yoga practice can award us with many benefits from a calmer mind to a more strong and flexible body. One of the Read the full article…

Routine

Happy December! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am so grateful for you and very much appreciate you for being a part of the Yoga Blend family! From an Ayurvedic perspective, we are in the midst of Vata season which is made up of the elements of air and ether with the qualities of light, mobile, cold, dry, subtle and rough. If we are not careful, this time of year can lead us to feel overwhelmed in our minds and rigid in our bodies. Taking the time to nurture ourselves through the practice of balancing opposites, we are Read the full article…

Peace

I hope your month is going well so far. I have been struggling with what to write for a few days in light of the terrorist attack in Paris and the violence being perpetuated throughout the world. My heart aches with the amount of hatred that exists between humans. I keep wishing I had a megaphone to the world and I could yell “STOP”. Everyone. Just stop. And take a breath. What if we all decided, right here, right now, to end violence? What if we all became deeply compassionate simply by choosing to be so and realized that every Read the full article…

surrender to the now

Happy November! As the season changes, we are changing right along with it so our practices should change as well. It takes our attention, curiosity and a willingness to know what to change and how to go about it. The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, which is the foundational text for the philosophy of Yoga, is filled with reminders and practices for us to have a more balanced mind and therefore, a more balanced life. The practice of the 8 limbs is an integral part of Yogic Philosophy and is a way to develop the quality of discernment which is the Read the full article…

Aloha

I hope you are having a great month so far! It was so great to see so many of you at the studio last week. Currently, I am in Hawaii about to begin our 10th annual Charka Retreat. It is so magical being on the Big Island and I love how easy and natural it feels to drop into the spirit of Aloha. I’ve been to Hawaii many times and I always knew that ‘Aloha’ was a greeting used in Hawaii but up until a few years ago, I didn’t know that ‘Aloha’ meant ‘to share in the breath of Read the full article…

Commit

I hope you are have a great month so far! As I mentioned at the first of the month, September is Yoga Month which is a great time to commit or re-commit to your yoga practice. The past few weeks, I have been re-committing to my practice in a whole new way. If you saw my practice from the outside, it wouldn’t look like much. But from the inside, my practice is deepening in ways that I never expected and this is such a great lesson for me. Things aren’t always what they seem and when we attach ourselves to Read the full article…

Now

September is Yoga Month…a great time to celebrate and re-commit to this practice we all love so much. Speaking of commitment :)…the very first of the Yoga Sutras is ‘atha yoganusasanam.’ Over the years, I have heard so many different translations of the sutras and the one I heard most for the first sutra was, ‘now begins the practice (or instruction) of Yoga.’ Later, as I really started to dive deep into this handbook for the teachings of the Philosophy of Yoga with a teacher who studied the sutras in India for well over a decade, I begin to have Read the full article…

Commitment

Hi! I hope you are having a great month so far. If you have chosen to embark on our monthly challenge and practice something new, I hope you are learning the true value of what it means to practice. Motivated by our Instagram Challenge, I started practicing the piano again just last week after a 30 year break and am already very excited about what I will learn about myself in the process. At the first of the month, I talked about how if we want to get better at something we have to practice. In Yogic Philosophy, practice is Read the full article…

Practice

Happy August! I can’t believe it’s already the 8th month of the year. I am currently up North for a Yoga Therapy Training and am deeply immersed in the practices and teachings of yoga. Although I have been at this practice for 20 years and opened the studio because I wanted to share these life-changing teachings, I am still fascinated by just how deep this practice goes and am always delighted by what I discover. When we do the holistic (body, breath, mind) practice of yoga, the benefits are numerous affecting all systems of the body. As an added bonus, Read the full article…

Freedom

Happy July! With the 4th of July coming up this weekend, I have been thinking a lot about Freedom and what it means to me. The 4th and final chapter of Yoga Sutras, the handbook for the Philosophy of Yoga, is about freedom (or kaivalya) which is said to be the ultimate result of a dedicated yoga practice. Freedom can be recognized and defined in so many ways and it is completely individual. For example, the more were practice deepening and lengthening our breath, the more freedom we have in our lungs to take even deeper and longer breaths. The Read the full article…

Mindfulness

I hope you are having a great month so far! I just attended the Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research a couple of weekends ago and it was an amazing immersion of learning about the research being done in the field of Yoga Therapy. I was so inspired by the presenters and the work they are doing and am really glad I had the chance to learn from those on the cutting edge of Yoga Therapy and Research. The one thing that really challenged me was the incessant talking of the people in attendance. As someone who does a lot Read the full article…

Just Breathe

Happy June! Whether life is going well or life is challenging, just breathe. Sometimes when things are going well, I find myself holding my breath. As if I want to hold onto the good and not let it go. However, change is inevitable, so it’s best to just take it in and appreciate it while things are going well. Even more often, I find myself holding my breath when things are challenging. As if by holding my breath, the challenge won’t actually enter my life. If only it were that simple. Most of us are not taught to breathe through Read the full article…

Finding Center

I hope you’re enjoying the Spring. Our lives, just like nature, are changing all the time. As things happen or show up in our lives, we are quick to label them as ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Once that is decided, we either go towards something or we run from it. In the running towards or away, it is important to remember we’re still running. And if we’re always running, eventually we will suffer because it’s not sustainable. There is a tendency to cling to what we want and try to avoid what we don’t. So much of what I have read, Read the full article…

Expectations

Happy May! I hope you are enjoying your Spring and the blooming of life all around. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about expectations. Over the years, I have often heard (and maybe you have too) that we shouldn’t have expectations when we practice. Yet, we set goals for our future and of course we want them to come to fruition. Which means we actually do expect something. One of my teachers used to say, “Yoga helps us to get comfortable with paradox”. And I couldn’t agree more. On the one hand, it is important that we show up to Read the full article…

Cultivating your Authentic Self

I hope you’re having a great month so far! Authenticity is a noble desire that most people can agree is something they try to be or at least would like to be.  Yet, regardless of how bad we want to be authentic and we know in our hearts that we would be happier if we were it more often, it is important to remember that authenticity is a practice and doing something we think is authentic can feel anything but. For example, if someone has been negative and pessimistic their whole life, that is what will feel authentic to them. Read the full article…

Patience

Yoga Blend, Burbank, Christy Marsden

Happy April! Spring has sprung and with it comes the excitement of expansion, growth and possibility. However, if we are not paying attention, that excitement can easily lead to anxiousness because the allure of the future can be a mighty one, continually calling us out of the Now. This is where the practice of patience can be so helpful. Dictionary.com lists the first definition of patience as: the quality of being patient as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like. The 2nd definition listed is: an ability or willingness to Read the full article…

Being in Our Truth

Happy spring (almost!)  I am in Nashville where it went from crazy winter snows to 70 degress and sunny in a matter of a week.  Spring has definitely sprung and with it, I feel the excitement and energy of the season rising. Being in my truth has been a common theme for me for many years.  I often call myself a recovering people pleaser.  I was super nice and super agreeable most of my life, but so much of who I really was, what I thought and what I wanted to say, was repressed.  The repercussions of that have taken Read the full article…

10 Years Strong

March 4th marked Yoga Blend’s 10 year anniversary. Knowing that to be true, it is still hard to believe. As I reflect back on the past 10 years, I am filled with so many emotions so bare with me. I can honestly say it has been the the hardest, most challenging, most rewarding, and most amazing years of my life so far. Back when I first started yoga 20 years ago, I knew right away that I wanted to teach and I started teaching a couple of years later. As I started teaching, I knew that I wanted to open a Read the full article…

Balancing Opposites

Life is such mystery.  One big beautiful mystery.  One minute we are laughing, one minute we are crying and the next we feel numb.  This is it.  This is the human experience.  The full range of what it means to be alive is available right here.  Right now.  There is nothing that happens that is not a part of life. Yoga is many things to many people and every reason for embarking on a yoga journey is a valid one.  I started yoga for low back pain and it certainly helped with my low back pain.  And so much more. Where Attention Goes, Energy Flows

Happy February!  I hope you are having a great start to the new month.  I’ve been thinking a lot about what I am giving my attention to lately. Where attention goes, energy flows.  What are you giving your attention to?  A couple of weeks ago I wrote about habits and how they define us.  One way to undo a habit that no longer serves us is by doing something else.  When we give our attention to something, energy begins to flow in that direction.  The more we focus in that direction, the more energy starts to build and creation starts Read the full article…
