Take Steps Now to Avoid Future Discomfort

I hope you are having a great month so far. I am so happy to be back in Burbank and at the Blend!

I was up super early yesterday for a full day of travel and was feeling grateful that I am able to be in Nashville with my family and still come to Burbank every few weeks to be with my Yoga Blend family. Although totally worth it, it can be really challenging to travel every few weeks. I will admit, it took me quite awhile to learn how to take care of myself in the process.

Yoga Sutra 2.16 speaks of taking steps now to avoid future discomfort. When things are going good, there is a tendency to put less energy into our practices and self care routines. We feel more confident and strong and tend to take on more things leaving less time for ourselves.

And while it is true that Yoga is great for helping us with all kinds of things such as reducing stress, increasing focus, gaining strength, finding flexibility, etc. Yoga at its best is a preventive practice rather than a prescriptive one.

When we feel great, we may feel that we don’t need to practice as much when actually, that is the best time to up our practice in order to prepare us for when things get hard so that we can handle the stress or hard times with more ease and grace.

One of my favorite quotes that speaks to this is: “You don’t repair the sail in the middle of the storm” (sorry, I cannot remember or find the author of this quote!) We will be better quipped to handle the storm if we repair the sail when the weather is good.

I had to learn this the hard way when I start living in two cities on opposite sides of the country but once I did, it changed the way I approach so much in my life. Challenges will arise, but if I am consistent in my practice, they don’t seem nearly as overwhelming when they do.

We have a lot happening around the Blend. I am really excited to teach Monday night, 6:45 Vinyasa and 8pm Stretch as well as on Tuesday for the Heart Lead the Way workshop at 7:30pm with my dear friend Ben Caron. Would love to see you at one or all of them! Please check out all we have coming up here.

With infinite love and gratitude…
Namaste,
Christy
