I hope you are having a great month!
This newsletter is coming out a week late because sometimes, regardless of our efforts, things just don’t work out the way we planned. Better late than never!
The past week has been the ultimate in surrender and letting go for me. So many plans, so many intentions. So many upsets and so many disappointments. This is life. The real stuff.
During all of the challenges, I had to continuously remind myself that the best way to handle the unexpected and allow the unfolding is through surrender. I am sure many of us have a hard time with surrender. I certainly do! It can be so frustrating when we feel we are not in control and when things don’t work out they way we intend them to.
There are so many things we cannot control AND there are so many things we can. It is important to remember to put our energy into the things we can.
The Yoga Sutras offer a way to help facilitate the act of surrendering or letting go. First, we reflect on what has worked in the past and what has not, perhaps by writing in a journal, reading a sacred text or seeking the advice of someone we trust. Then we take action by coming up with a plan that we feel is best and seeing it through to completion. Finally, we must get out of our own way and release the results of our actions by simply allowing things to unfold, trusting that we did everything we could with the information and experience that we had at the time. This is where surrender comes in.
Sure, it hurts or can be frustrating when things don’t go the way we planned. We are human and that is to be expected. But the inability to let it go and the long term suffering that comes from that usually is because we know we could have done better and we didn’t.
So, my mantra for this month is ‘do your best…and forget the rest.’
If you are into the philosophy of Yoga like I am…come join me for Yoga Off the Mat on August 12th where we will explore and discuss the depth of what Yoga has to offer on and off the mat. Details here.
We have lots of great workshops coming up in the next few months to support you in your practice and your ability to surrender, so please check it all out here.
I look forward to seeing you at the Blend when I am back in town in a couple of weeks!
With infinite love and gratitude…
