Gratitude

I hope you are having a great month so far and find yourself surrounded by an abundance of things to be grateful for despite any challenges you may be facing.

As humans, we live in a world of duality. Regardless if it is an ‘illusion’ or not, our human life is a constant play between seemingly opposing forces such as light and dark, hot and cold, effort and ease, etc. The practice of Yoga is about guiding us inward to align body, mind and spirit so we are better able to reconcile these extremes for a more sattvic (or balanced) life.

It is easy to focus on all that is wrong in our lives and in the world. There is so much we want to improve upon and change. This is totally healthy and necessary for us to evolve and grow. However, it is equally necessary to focus on what is right and good in our lives as well.

If we are putting off our happiness until things get better, we may never actually experience that happiness. Taking the ‘one day when’ approach to life, we imagine a future we want and think that once it arrives we will finally be happy. However, happiness only exists right now in the present.

I spent most of my life thinking that if I could just get this job, or that house, or this relationship, or make a certain amount money, THEN, I would truly be happy. I could finally start living. As I got all those things, there was a temporary relief disguised as happiness only to be met shortly after with a feeling of unhappiness and longing.

This is where gratitude comes in. It is the seed from which growth occurs. If we cannot appreciate what we have right now we certainly won’t find it in the future and any feelings of ‘relief” for getting what we desire will be very short lived and quickly met with feelings of dissatisfaction once again.

A daily practice of gratitude awakens us to the beauty and abundance that we have right now. It is not saying that things are perfect or that there isn’t room for improvement but rather that we appreciate what we have in the moment and acknowledge just how far we have come to arrive right here, right now.

We have lots of fun and informative workshops coming up as well as a few class cancellations on our anniversary weekend so we can do some painting. See our workshop schedule here and our modified class schedule here!
