Happy December! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As I was thinking about what to write this month, the opening line of a song a friend of mine wrote is what kept coming up: “Get your head right.” This phrase pretty much sums up the practice of yoga for me. Getting my head right has made all the difference in my life.
My mind used to play pretty harsh tricks on me, leading me down some very dark, confusing and lonely roads, convincing me of things that I believed as truth which I then would unconsciously play out in my life. Through practice, I have learned to get my head right.
According to yoga, our mind is simply a tool of perception. We come into this world with a filtering system that consists of our mind and the senses. It is the way in which we take the world in. Through the everyday ups and downs of life, our filter gets dirty and the mind, amidst the confusion, will search for something, anything to land on. It’s a distraction jungle out there and if we aren’t actively engaging in practices to keep our filter clean and clear so that we have the ability to consciously choose where to focus, our mind may land on something that draws us farther away from our truth. If we keep our attention there, our mind is likely to get better and better at focusing on that something, whether it makes us happy or not, simply because it is pointed in that direction. Then the mind starts to do what it does best which is create habits. The more it stays focused on something, the deeper the habitual groove becomes.
When we practice yoga, we learn to aim our mind in one direction and the direction we start with is towards our self. By focusing our mind on the breath and the body and how they work in relation to one another, we learn more about who we are. As a result of this practice, we come to know ourselves better and are better equipped to consciously choose where to focus in general. As our senses sharpen and we get to know ourselves, we can see more clearly and the more clearly we see, the more likely we are to choose to focus on the path that is true for us and allows our joy to unfold. Then, we can walk towards that truth with confidence regardless of what happens to us along the way because we know that we have our mind focused in the right direction. In other words, we’ve got our head right.
At Yoga Blend, we do our best to provide you with the tools needed to get your mind focused in the right direction by offering various practices, workshops, classes and events to help you clean the filter of the mind to allow your truth to shine through. Thank you for trusting us with your practice.
Please check out all that we have coming up including our Holiday Party which is this Saturday night. It’s a great time to connect with the community outside of regular classes. Details are below. Also, we normally take the photos, but this year, we’d love for it to be a community effort and are looking for people to take photos at the party. So, bring your cameras, get some candid shots and post them to our Facebook and Instagram pages by tagging our location and #yogablend. We’d so appreciate seeing the night from your perspective. We hope to see you there!
With infinite love and gratitude…
