Freedom through practice

During this time of year around the 4th of July, I always reflect on what freedom means to me.  I think back to when I first started yoga and how much I was controlled by the negative, worrisome thoughts of my mind.  Even after finding yoga, my journey was quite a tumultuous one, but the practice was like a road map guiding me in the right direction. 

According to the philosophy of yoga, consistent practice over time with dedication, enthusiasm and conviction will ultimately lead us to freedom from suffering.  It doesn’t mean we don’t experience hardship or pain but rather we are free from the long term suffering that can result from those experiences.  Through focusing our mind, we are able to settle its activities which allows us to see more clearly.  With clarity, we stop reaching outward to find the truth of who we are and experience our true nature realizing that the ultimate freedom resides within. 

That is definitely a freedom worth working toward and it is why I have been practicing for over 23 years.  It is not perfect…but the progress is worth every effort, every time.
