Happy middle of the month! I am typing at 30,000 feet on my way to Nashville. People often ask how we are doing all the traveling back and forth and exclaim how hard it must be. I usually tend to agree but lately, I have been stopping myself and saying instead, ‘it is going great because this is what we are choosing.’
As I reflect on this further, I acknowledge that yes, it may be hard sometimes, but it is what we have chosen for ourselves and we did it consciously. Anytime we are aware of and dedicated to our choices, we are better able to manage the ups and downs those choices bring because we feel that we are active participants in the creation of our everyday lives. It doesn’t mean that everything goes our way, but rather, we feel empowered by our ability to choose in ways that bring forth our best self regardless of what is going on around us. When we make a choice that is well thought out and considers all the options available to us, it gives us the ability lean into the discomfort when it arises with more ease and grace. There is great power in choosing consciously.
Life is a series of choices. Day after day, month after month, year after year, we make choices in every single aspect of our lives. We choose what to eat, what to say and how to say it, how to react, what to wear, who to support, who to love, how to treat people, what to think, what to watch…the list goes on ad infinitum. Every single moment of our lives is a choice.
If we are not conscious of our choices and simply do something for convenience sake, out of habit, because someone else wants us to or because we just don’t know any better, it is easy to feel victimized by life. As if life is out to get us. I admit, I felt this way most of my life. But by practicing yoga, I have become much more aware and as a result, feel that I am actively participating in most of the choices I make. It all started with paying attention to my breath. Choosing to breathe deeply, even in the discomfort is what lead me to ‘wake up’, start paying attention and make better choices…slowly, over time.
If you are struggling in a particular area of your life, a great practice is to simply notice the choices you make each day and how those choices affect you in the moment, in a day, over a week. Try your best to do it without judgement and remember that it is within your power to consciously choose each moment and awareness is the first step.
Thank you for choosing Yoga Blend to be a part of your life!
