I hope your month is going well!

As I consider all the things I want to create and look to others for inspiration, the following quote keeps ringing in my head: Comparison is the thief of joy.

With the neurosis and suffering that comes from comparing ourselves to others, especially on the internet, I’ve been putting my attention toward respecting, appreciating and celebrating others for their unique gifts.

One of the surest ways to increase suffering and stop our dreams in their path is to constantly look outside of ourselves in comparison to others.

When we are always comparing, it can take away a very valuable opportunity to discover something unique and valuable about ourselves. It can take away the confidence in going for what we want. It can make us feel like there is no need for us to do x, since so many others are already doing it. But no matter how many people are doing whatever it is we want to do, it’s not too late. It’s never too late.

It is wonderful to feel excited and motivated to do something great because someone else is doing something great if gives us the push we need to take action. This is not comparison. This is inspiration!

Comparison is feeling jealous and not happy for another. Comparison is thinking we are not good enough or smart enough or talented enough in relation to others. Comparison steals our light and makes us feel less than.

Yoga is a practice of turning our attention inward which can be really helpful when we find ourselves constantly comparing to others. Taking the time each day to look within can help us to learn and grow from where we are right now. Even if it is not where we want to be. We all have to start somewhere and no matter how dedicated we are, sometimes we veer off path and get lost. It happens to everyone. It’s all part of the process. Just keep doing the work. Look in. Find your strengths. Breathe deeply and fan the flame of your desire. Support others in doing the same. You be you, let them be them.

With the consistent practice of drawing our attention inward instead of always looking outward, we learn to tap into our own inner guidance, strength and wisdom. As a result, we will likely discover just how wonderfully unique we are and can joyfully celebrate others for being wonderfully unique as well.
