Happy September! I hope you had a great Holiday weekend celebrating this beautifully mysterious and challenging life. September is Yoga Month which is a great time to introduce those you love to the practice of yoga or to re-commit yourself to your own practice in our annual Yoga Month Challenge.
Next year will mark 20 years since I started this incredible practice that literally changed the course of my life. I can’t even imagine what life would be like today were it not for a friend who casually mentioned that yoga might help me with my low back pain. And help with my back pain it did. But as I reflect back on the past 19 years, the ‘pain’ that continues to be helped by yoga is immeasurable and doesn’t have a whole lot to do with my low back (although, it still does help with that too :).
For me, yoga is a way to live in this crazy world without losing my way when life gets overwhelming. It teaches me to not get too attached to the ‘good’ or the ‘bad’ but to understand both as a part of what it means to be alive. It helps me to take responsibility for my own life without relying on others to ‘fix’ me. It is way for me to remain realistic as I let go of negative tendencies and consciously choose to incorporate more positivity into my life for a more balanced perspective. It’s a way for me to see the future that I want and move towards it despite the obstacles that may arise. It teaches me to be vulnerable and open myself up to experience the beauty of life all around me while remaining strong in who I am and what I believe in. It reminds me to breathe deeply when I feel anxious, upset or afraid. It allows me to authentically connect with and love other people. It encourages me to understand myself better which helps me to make better choices and live more congruently. It supports me in enhancing the quality of each and every one of my relationships. It allows me to continue to live a life I love even in the depths of sorrow. It guides me away from competition and into cooperation. It helps me to become healthier in my mind, my body and my spirit and encourages me over and over again to be fully immersed in and grateful for this moment. Basically, it has helped and continues to help me to do everything in my life better. Not perfect, but better and that is good enough for me.
So, as we celebrate Yoga Month, it’s a good time to reflect on why you love this practice and recommit yourself to it for your own personal reasons whatever they may be. Or maybe introduce someone to yoga that you know could benefit from the practice just as you have. We are all just trying to figure this life out and for me, yoga has been the best road map I could find and it is my passion and purpose to share it with others. We have so much coming up to explore this amazing practice including a Positive Psychology Workshop on Relationships that I am super excited to lead as enhancing the quality of my relationships has been a huge part of my journey and I love helping others do the same. Also, Bekah and I have our annual Chakra Retreat coming up in beautiful Joshua Tree where have an extra day this year to explore these amazing wheels of light and how they relate to our psyche. There is no limit to the ways in which this practice can be explored, so please check out all that we having coming up below. And above all else, just keep practicing. It’s so worth it.
