Adapting to life as it unfolds

I hope your month is off to a great start.  I started the month off with an injury that totally got in the way of the plans I had for several days of hiking which got me thinking as life often does 🙂

So much of life is about making plans and moving toward them but then what if it doesn’t turn out the way we intended?

It is easy to fall into feeling as if these disappointments along the way are personal or maybe a sign.  Who knows why things turn out the way they do.  We can make all the plans perfectly, but sometimes, there’s a snow storm and our plane can’t take off that day.  It’s the way life flows.  We don’t have to interpret it as a sign that we should never fly again.

Same when it comes to our dreams or goals. We put a target out there and do all the things to move toward it.  If an obstacle arises, we pause and reflect.  Then we figure out if we need to move around it, through it, over it, under it or just wait it out for awhile.   The practice is to let go of the goal as it was and adapt to the new situation at hand.

Yoga is a practice that can help us to adapt.  We adjust our body, we deepen our breath, we focus our thoughts and we re-align with the new reality as it is and just breathe.  Through practice, we learn to adapt to each moment as it arises, regardless if it is exactly what we intended, because often times it is not. The goal is to stay on course even when life knocks us off balance.  We come back to the breath, back to center, back to here and now.  Then we throw a new target out there and start moving toward it, one breath at a time adapting as needed along the way.
